my craft room is gross :(

You know... most of my house is super neat.  But there's just something about the craft room / library / dumping ground for everything else room ... that makes it impossible to clean.

Oh, you think that's not too bad?  Check out the corner that's out of frame to the left!

SIIIIIIIIIIIGH.  I'm going to go fix this up a little right now.  We do have some better shelving on the way that should take care of the yarn overflow issue.  And that huge box that's sitting in the middle of the room will go away when the living room shelves go up.

But there is still TOO MUCH STUFF in this room! :x

Okay guys, show me your messy rooms so I can feel better about this. :p

  1. There is no bloody way you are seeing mine ... you think yours is bad ... I only see a few issues. I have no craft room so everything is in my bedroom. Just imagine it is not big, I have only 2 shelves and they are full, the books and folders are piled onto drawers (they go in 3 heights so 2 can be used ... like stepping system so looks a bit pleasant), boxes stuffed under bed, next to drawers, under table, under easel, on top of wardrobe, in wardrobe. Hmmm if I can get rid of few things ... it won't be too bad. Then again I also have 5 orchids (one of which is pregnant), and 2 unidentified plants. When I was back at Uni everyone always marvelled at my ability to fit everything rather well ... but I think I am reaching my storage capacity.

    1. I used to live in a very small house with five other people, and I got really fed up with clutter. I think I may have gone a bit off the deep end in the other direction, but I'm always so afraid I'll end up living in a hoarders style mess again. :oooo

I got used to having a small space. Maybe I haven't learned how to manage a larger space yet... I just get really frustrated with a mess! When I get stressed out, I clean, so maybe that's something to do with it...

Your orchids sound lovely! We have a few orchid plants but they never flower...

    2. I can be definitely considered a hoarder ... although it drives me insane at the same time. Orchid tips:
      - are the roots tight in the pots (they need to be as lots of space will make the orchid concentrate on root growth instead of flowering).
      - try getting some orchid drips ... they are not too expensive on ebay and one drip should last about a month per orchid.
      - another thing I read once something to do with cutting dry stems in a certain spot (I think above those triangular spots where flowers come out)
      - and depending on the species they might need more light (if the leaves are a beautiful deep green they probably need more light).

Mine are not flowering at the moment either ... but they are ill so I am not too sad (the peat we have used for repotting in spring was infected with larvae). The one downstairs flowered every year before getting the infection. But with reduced watering, special chemicals, drips, and yellow traps I think the infection is decreasing ... and two of them have sprouted healthy new stems (one of which did not have a stem for about 2 years so a huge improvement). I am hoping for some flowers towards spring.

  2. I am not taking pictures either. I picked up quilting this year which has caused my craft room/office to get out of control. There are bags of fabric all over the place…except for my desk where I need to work on the days I work from home. That includes a full closet with a 16 cube shelf from IKEA. It is a goal for the upcoming year to only knit, crochet, quilt and cross stitch from my stash. and organize the craft room as I go. I think I will take a before and after for the year….it could be like a stitch from the stash - organize yourself SAL.

    1. I managed to get some stuff put away in my room just now so I'm feeling a little better. I totally agree, I want to work with my stash this year and reduce what I have rather than keep bringing in more. It's reached critical mass and it's getting impossible to add more. And there's no NEED for more, I just WANT more. Sigh.

Is the Ikea shelf the expedit? I just got a 4x4 for my living room and a 2x4 for the yarn stash, but I'm still waiting on delivery... should be next Monday. Can't wait!

    2. Yes…the Ikea Shelf is the Expedit - 4x4 (that I needed to take the doors off the closet to fit it in) but was well worth the expense. I got cloth cubes(plastic ones can snag yarn and fabric) and have things organized in those. I also put some 3M hooks on the inside walls that i could reach and put hoops, circular needles (really anything that could be hung up) on those. I am thinking a 4x4 would be beneficial for my quilting fabric at this point as well. Hmmmm

  3. Absolutely no way am I showing my room of shame. Yours is amazingly neat compared to mine. I do try to keep it as tidy as I can because my partner uses the room aswell as it has a nice big table and office chair. I can't imagine what it would look like if I had it to myself and didn't have to keep it semi reasonable. I too have decided that as far as stash goes enough is enough and I'm not buying any more unless it is necessary for a project for which I already have the majority of stash. My problem is I just keep accumulating stuff and never do any of the lovely projects I have planned. So I want to use what I have or buy for a particular project that I will absolutely be doing, no more adding to the pile. I'm kind of curious how much money I save this way as well. By the way this rule is also being enforced for books/movies/games/most magazines (unless I see something I absolutely cannot live without)

    1. Everyone refusing to show their room is just making me curious! :D But I understand, there are things that happen in my house (the sink, anyone?) that I wouldn't want anyone to know about. Haha!

Yes! That's what I'm trying to do too... destash more than just the stitching part of my life. It's a bit hard for me as I'm a collector of various things and I don't want to touch any of that right now. But there's a lot more that can be done. Games are something I struggle with... I looooove games and we actually have a line in our monthly budget for games! But I find myself playing only a few of them while the rest sit there. It's wasteful and kind of like hoarding. :(

Another problem is that I have a small business selling on eBay, and the things I sell have a lot of overlap with the things I collect. You can see how that leads to problems. *sigh*

I'm kind of excited to see how things go next year with using what I have instead of always wanting more!

  4. I'll show you mine! I just have to take a pic and I'm at work at the moment. My room is always a mess but the degrees of mess does change. I've even squeezed a single bed in there to take naps whilst stitching LOL!! I like your room, I don't think it's gross at all!!

  5. I don't even have a room! I have the corner of the living room, the edge of the settee and behind the settee too! My books are in the kitchen on the dresser and my finished pieces are under the bed while they wait their turn on the wall.
Both my boys have their own room, hubby has a work room and a shipping container but I only have corners, poor me!!

    1. Sounds like it's time for a revolution! You need to go conquer that shipping container... and fill it up with stash! :D Maybe you can negotiate for some space, it hardly seems fair that hubby has a room AND a container while you're stuck using whatever space you can find!
