Octopus Treasure Cave - WIP #1

The first part of Octopus Treasure Cave was released yesterday!  I hopped right to it and managed a measly 1/4 of the border, not counting the beaded or blackwork areas. :)  It doesn't look like much yet, but I'll keep going today.

Sorry for the awful picture, it's too early for a daylight photo and the flash washed things out a bit.

This is being done on PTP Phantom with a special thread conversion known as "the stuff I already had."  I did order a few threads but I'd say about 85% is from stash.  Go me. :)

I must say that working on dark fabric has been an experience!  I spent a lot of time obsessively counting and frogging at first, but I seemed to get the hang of it later on.  My greatest fear is that things won't line up once I get back around to the beginning.... :p

Not sure that working this on the scroll frame is a good idea as the tension isn't that great and I really need the fabric taut so I can find the holes more easily.  Plus I'm getting a serious crick in my neck from being hunched over so I can see the light I put behind the fabric!  I might put this on the ol' q-snap for a while.  Might need to get a 14" square snap so I can do the entire thing on it like a cheater. :)

Back to work!

  2. Wonderful start!! I had the dark fabric problem at first too. Mine for Deep Blue Sea is on black. I frogged a bit in the beginning, but after awhile, I got used to it. It's not so bad now. I have mine in the q-snaps for now, until it gets too big for them anyway. :)

Looking forward to seeing more! I haven't even bought the class yet...I guess I am just waiting for the right time, lol.

  3. Ooh I will enjoy watching your progress on this! The only reason I haven't signed up for this is I'm not sure where I would hang it after it's completed. It's too pretty to sit in a "completed but have nowhere to put it" box.

  5. So much blue...yum! Hmm, if you are really worried about it matching up when you get around, you might want to put in some grid lines...or at least a center vertical and horizontal line. At least that way you'd only have to frog one quadrant at most if you got off. Hope that makes sense....

  6. I totally understand your comments about scroll frames. I have tried and failed to getbon with the. Good old q snaps wouldn't be without them.

I always admire anyone who stitches on dark fabric, it is so hard but worth it when finished.

Wishing you a good weekend x

  7. You're using the same fabric I'm using for Deep Blue Sea. It's gorgeous, isn't it? Great job so far. I'd debated getting this companion piece, too.

A suggestion I have regarding the tension on scrolls - a fellow stitcher recommended getting those elastic clippy things you used to see on long dresses in the early to mid 90s (remember those?), and wrap them around the sides of the scroll to clamp the fabric taught. I imagine it probably depends on how many inches of gap you have between your fabric and bars, though.

  8. Lovely work. This one tempts me. I have seen the picture from chateliene on black but black scares me. The blue is a very pretty option. Can I ask what thread count
